The DNS of the third parties has become an essential for many users who pass more and more of those assigned by default by their operator to give an opportunity to others. Google DNS has always been the most popular, but we have never lost sight of alternatives such as OpenDNS. Now, two more have recently joined the market and have offered their services with a great force. Therefore, we will see this comparison of the fastest DNS in which we face 8.8.8.8 vs 9.9.9.9 vs 1.1.1.1, or what is the same, between Google, IBM Quad 9 and Cloudflare (in addition to others).

With us since 1983, this DNS system, for its acronym in English, Domain Name System, had to be implemented by necessity. Until then, a HOST file was used to save all the known domains. Obviously, the exponential growth of the Internet since then makes it impossible to maintain a system like this.

The DNS is basically responsible for “translating” the domain names to an IP address with which we can establish a connection. For that reason, our Internet provider automatically assigns us their DNS for navigation, but nothing prevents us from changing them for any other. Google DNS Garageband 10 1 6. has been popular for a long time and later came the IBM DNS dubbed Quad9. In the last week, we have known 1.1.1.1, new DNS faster and private than those of Google launched by Cloudflare.
DNS: 8.8.8.8 vs 9.9.9.9 vs 1.1.1.1
The arrival of Cloudflare’s DNS has shaken up a segment that seemed quite dominated by Google and OpenDNS. Their managers say that they are safer, more private and faster than the Internet giant. However, for this, we have echoed an interesting study that puts the focus on the different alternatives we have in the market in the form of DNS.
The DNS that are part of the study are:
- Google 8.8.8.8
- CloudFlare 1.1.1.1:
- Quad9 9.9.9.9
- OpenDNS 208.67.222.222
- Norton DNS 199.85.126.20
- CleanBrowsing 185.228.168.168
- Yandex DNS 77.88.8.7
- Comodo DNS 8.26.56.26
For the study, velocity measurements have been made from 18 locations throughout the planet. Among the locations, we find:
- North America: San Diego, Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, Montreal, Atlanta, Dallas, Fremont, San Francisco
- Europe: London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt
- Asia: Tokyo, Singapore, Bangalore (India), Sydney, Brisbane (Australia)
- South America: Sao Paulo
We can also make our own measurements from the location where we are using a free tool like DNS Performance Test that can be downloaded from your repository on GitHub. This is designed for Linux, although it can be used with the subsystem included in Windows. In addition, we have others like Namebench, for Windows, Mac and Linux that finds the best DNS for our connection.
Results of the study: these are the fastest DNS
This is a summary of the study’s findings indicating that all DNS providers, except Yandex, performed well in North America and Europe with responses of less than 15ms in all cases. However, the operation in Asia and South America was not so fast.
The DNS 1.1.1.1 Cloudflare was the fastest in 72% of the locations and velocities obtained the lower response of the planet with only 4.98ms. The second and third positions went to Google and IBM’s Quad9 in that order. Quad9 was faster than Google in North America and Europe, but it lowered its performance in Asia and South America.
The fastest-blocking DNS provider for adults was CleanBrowsing, so it should be an option to be considered by parents who want to keep their children’s Internet activity under control or organizations that do not want to allow free access to certain content
